Our business was founded in the neighborhood where it operates today by Meilich Katz in 1906 who instilled in his family the importance of personalized service along with the best prices. M. Katz, whose business still bears his name today began by selling furniture out of a tenement in the Lower East Side of Manhattan and eventually moved his thriving furniture business to a location on Stanton Street, just around the corner from where Katz Furniture stood for over fifty years on Essex Street. As they grew older, his three sons joined the business, forming M. Katz and Sons.

During the 1930’s, Irving, Pincus and Joseph Katz continued in the tradition of their father and established M. Katz and Sons as the destination for furniture in New York City. During their tenure, Katz’s moved to Essex Street near Delancey Street, the area was famous for Katz’s Delicatessen, Ratner’s Restaurant and bargains galore and is now known for trendy boutiques and popular restaurants.

By the late 1960’s, Irving’s sons Arthur and Maurice had succeeded their father and uncles M. Katz and Sons had moved to 146 Essex Street. The already legendary business continued to attract more customers by mere word-of-mouth who had heard about the low prices and the personal interest the Katz family took in each and every customer to assure their satisfaction.

Today, their sons keep the tradition alive by providing some of the lowest prices and some of the best customer service on top-quality name-brand furniture. They established a presence on the world wide web and installed a state-of-the-art computer system to track customer orders and provide a quick turnaround on customer inquiries. Nearly a century after Meilich Katz sold his first piece of furniture out of a tenement on the Lower East Side, the fifth generation of Katz family members have begun to contribute to the legend of Katz Furniture at its new location 20 Orchard Street (also known as Bargain Street).
